Where to Buy Wigs in New York City

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Wearing a wig can be scary for someone who's never taken the plunge before. But not only can they shield your hair during the summer months (read: protect it from humidity and UV rays), but these hair pieces are an easier way to go for a dramatic new look without commitment — think of them as the hair version of a temporary tattoo.

There are a ton of different directions to go, in terms of both style and price point, from customized pieces designed in salons by celebrity stylists to fun and affordable wigs that still look natural.

Some of the top places around the city to find wigs that won't look super wig-like — unless you want it to, that is — are mapped out below. Check out the handpicked stores and salons and get busy planning your summer alter ego.

Mane Beauty is tucked away just a block from Madison Square Garden, but its wig selection is anything but hidden. Head up to the second floor to find the well-lit sea of wigs in a slew of colors and textures.

Susy Oludele may not be a household name, but her long braided and cornrowed styles have been seen on the sisters Knowles. Shop her ready-to-go handmade crochet wigs or have a custom wig created in her Brooklyn shop.

For a high end "crown" (they don't call them wigs in this salon), make a stop at Emmy-winning wig stylist Hadiiya Barbel's Soho showroom. Barbel has a long list of celebrity clientele, and her luscious wigs look like you grew them yourself. Make an appointment or pop by during walk-in hours on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to shop her selection or have a piece made to order.

Wigs and Plus

This is probably the most well-known wig shop in the city. Prices start at just $20, and everything from neon bobs to big, cascading curls are in stock. The wig section is in the back and staff is on standby for any questions you have.

Apollo Beauty Land

Harlem's 125th Street is home to more hair stores than one can count, but this one boasts a huge selection of wigs in so many styles and at so many price points. They also have a salon in the store, so you can learn to style something that's already available or have a custom wig made.

Broad City made us include this stop. If you find yourself roaming this street on a random summer night and feel like changing it up on a whim, grab one of these cheaper styles and make it a night to remember (or not). And get ready to haggle!

The Hair Shop

Fulton Mall is home to plenty of wig and hair shops, but this one has one of the better selections — we couldn't help but notice how overjoyed another shopper was with the wig that staff helped her pick out last time we visisted. You'll find mohawks, afros, and straight styles here, just to name a few (so try not to get overwhelmed).
