Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Getting dressed in New York City in the winter is very easy. Spoiler: It all comes down to your outerwear. It's the only thing that anyone can pay attention to fashion-wise as you shuffle to and from the train (freezing your butt off, natch). So it should be not only functional — polar vortices are no joke — but also good-looking, a warm purchase that may result in a rant Kanye West would be proud of.

Below, we've mapped out 17 places in New York City to make this crucial purchase (you'll be wearing it for the next six months, remember) from the venerable to edgy, at varying price points.

Uniqlo is a must-shop in colder months not just for Heattech tee shirts, tank tops and turtlenecks, but for the range of outerwear that includes styles for $100 or less. Though the just-opened Fifth Avenue store looks much bigger from the outside than it actually is, that doesn't mean that the outerwear inside is lacking. This season's A-line wool coat, the shawl collared coat, and raw-cut wool capes certainly speak against that.
