The Kara Sample Sale Makes a Strong Case for Buying a Spring Backpack

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We popped into the Kara sample sale, located in the Garment District's CFDA Incubator, during the friends and family preview last night to survey the discounted merchandise and found that current season designs and one-off samples are up to 70% off retail prices.

Some styles go as low as $10, but the pricing sweet spot for the best merchandise (ahem, backpacks) comes closer to $180. What does that mean in terms of savings? Comparable styles are available online for $495 right now.

This is the perfect opportunity to stock up on spring styles; the women working the sale even mentioned some early Mother's Day shopping. Backpacks are the star of this sale in varying sizes, colorways, and materials, which generally puts their pricing between $115 and $220. You'll also find tiny drawstring bags ($10—$15) small clutches ($25), zip-around wallets ($75), small bucket bags ($95), totes ($185), messenger bags starting at $200, dry bags ($170), and stowaways starting at $170.

We also spotted a lone furry clutch ($50) that the aspiring street style star in you will love. Click through the gallery above for a sampling of what to expect at the sale.

Prices are denoted on emoji-riddled signs placed on shelves and bins throughout the space, keeping things pretty straightforward. And as an added bonus to actually make a purchase, you'll be rewarded with a coupon for an additional 15% off for this sale that's valid only on the weekend — they're trying to make a repeat customer out of you.

And while you're at the CFDA Incubator, pop across the hall to Nomia, who is also having a sample sale through Saturday afternoon. Prices weren't as good as at Kara, but we found a few really cute jumpsuits for up to 70% off retail prices — we added pictures of those to the gallery above, too.
