Is Niketown Moving Into FAO Schwarz's Old Space?

When Niketown's lease at 6 East 57th Street expires in May 2017, the activewear brand could relocate its flagship store around the corner to the former FAO Schwarz space. According to The Real Deal, the brand's in "late-stage negotiations" to secure a lease here, but it's unclear whether they're looking to take the entire 61,000 square feet or just a portion of it.

Nike has supposedly been looking to leave its current home — a cavernous 95,000-square foot space that shares a block with Burberry, Chanel, Miu Miu, and Saint Laurent— since 2013, but that's no sweat off the property owner's back. "If they extend fine, if not, we will lease it," Donald Trump told the New York Post at the time. "It's a great building. You know it was made out of steel."

For a while, rumors swirled that Niketown would take over the space left vacant by H&M at 640 Fifth Avenue at the end of 2014; instead, Forever 21 briefly lived here before making way for a massive Victoria's Secret that's expected for the fall.

Nike isn't the only sporty retailer looking at Fifth Avenue: Late last year, Adidas signed a 15-year lease at the corner of 46th Street that's about a third of the size of what Nike has now.
