The Little Shoe Store, Eastern Mountain Sports Won't Make it to Spring

This week brings news of shutterings of two very different stores in two very different neighborhoods. First up is Eastern Mountain Sports on the Upper West Side: Local blog West Side Rag reports that the outdoorsy purveyor is closing its doors on the corner of Broadway and 76th Street on February 24th.

Until then, you can grab items like sneakers, fleece jackets, and sleeping bags for up to 70% off retail prices. The brand's other New York City store is in Soho, which is still up and running despite sporting rent signage late last summer.

And diagonally across the island is The Little Shoe Store in the Lower East Side, whose last day of business is March 31st, according to The Lo-Down. The name doesn't refer to the two-year-old store's size — though at 250 square feet, it's not inaccurate — but rather its selection of merchandise, which owner Sydney Pringle refers to as "grownup shoes for petite feet."

The Little Shoe Store originally opened on Orchard Street before moving to its current Clinton Street location; Pringle told the neighborhood site that foot traffic there was never great and construction next door only made it worse. Luckily for the little-footed, this isn't totally the end, since The Little Shoe Store will continue as an online-only business. But as its Facebook announcement hints, that doesn't mean there won't be closing sales to take advantage of in the coming weeks.
