Where Racked Editors Shopped This Week

Welcome back to Shopping Journal, a weekly feature where Racked editors share what they're buying and where.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

I've been in search of the perfect pair of gold hoops for the past six months — big, tubular, shiny, can-wear-with-anything hoops — and thanks to Curbed's EIC Kelsey Keith, I found them at Sincerely Tommy in Bed-Stuy.

The eight miles I walked to get there (3.9 each way!) took me through so many different Brooklyn neighborhoods that I felt like I'd traveled around the world by the time I reached the concept store. Kai Avent-de Leon's bright shop opened in 2014, selling everything from furry Moroccan style slippers to matcha lattes.

Racks are filled with brands this avid shopper's never heard of, and the floor is stocked with woven bags, chic summer hats, and beautiful jewelry.

I got my hoops — the extra large ones from Mexico-based Tuza — and picked up a navy, Jacquemus-like dress from Toit Volant. And then I left before I bought everything else. — Britt Aboutaleb, editor-in-chief

I headed to Aritzia this week in search of, specifically, a romper that wouldn’t leave me with a constant wedgie of either the rear or frontal variety; a challenge, considering my absurdly long torso. But believe it or not, the Wilfred Grignard romper fit me perfectly, and had a crossover back detail I loved.

I bought it in black, and promptly scurried out of the store before another slip dress managed to tempt me. — Elana Fishman, entertainment editor

Lately I’ve had a really bad (or good?) habit of shopping in the name of “reporting.” In the past week especially, I’ve gone on a bit of a vintage rampage. First, there was the black with red piping, ’50s-via-the-‘80s jumpsuit embroidered with the name “Florence” that I picked up at Rabbits, while on the way to check out a different, new vintage store in Williamsburg.

Then, there were the two graphic tees and the printed silk dress I scored while checking out said store. A few days later, I came across yet another brand-new vintage shop on my walk home from the subway, which I popped into just in case it was worth covering for Racked NY (which it was).

The $5 rack had lots of tempting options, but the item I couldn’t resist (despite already blowing my shopping budget for the week) was a tiny, black beaded purse for $10. It’s only big enough to fit my phone, credit cards, keys, and lipstick — but what else do you really need? — Cory Baldwin, shopping editor

Photo: The Line

Last weekend I was in Amagansett, staying with friends who have a house there (#blessed). I was completely disorganized all week and ended up tossing stuff into a bag an hour before I left. I managed to pack a jump rope but forgot toothpaste, a hair brush, and a reasonable amount of underwear.

I dealt with the first and third issues (borrowed from hostess and laundry) and decided to wander over to the Amagansett town square to hunt for a brush. There isn’t a drugstore there, so I popped into the old -school hardware store. The proprietor laughed at me.

Next, I actually considered walking into the pet store and finding a brush. (Hair is hair, right? I opted not to do that.) Finally, I walked into The Line, the Soho and LA-based stylish concept shop that just opened a Hamptons outpost.

The store was like Gwyneth Paltrow (whose family has a compound in Amagansett) in retail form. Floaty $1,400 Altuzarra dresses mingled with floral Manolo Blahniks, and furry throws without price tags were everywhere.

Finally I spotted a beauty wall, with brands like Sachajuan and Sunday Riley. Right in the middle was a cup holding two brushes. Success! I picked one up. It was a Mason Pearson. Uh-oh. I flipped over the price tag: $150. That, my friends, is the Hamptons in a nutshell. (I ended up getting a $12 Paul Mitchell brush at the local salon.) — Cheryl Wischhover, beauty writer

This weekend, I’m headed to my boyfriend’s family reunion — an event that involves me attempting to impress approximately 200 Italians — and calls for a cute but somewhat modest dress. I tried Loft, an old standby for this sorta thing, which had some cute options but were sold out in my size. I did succumb to this dandelion romper, though.

I hit & Other Stories and COS in midtown, and while I was generally unimpressed by the selection of dresses (especially the prints) at & Other Stories, Cos was having a pretty decent sale.

After extensively considering a mustard yellow, knee-length wrap skirt, I ultimately passed because it was a little too pre-Anthropologie-mom for my day-to-day life. (Also, wrap skirts kind of stress me out because I feel like they’re hard to style).

I would highly recommend Cos for their amazing collection of white work shirts though, if that’s your summer uniform. I ultimately only walked away with a very basic striped tee that was super cheap.

For the reunion, I ended up borrowing a Kate Spade Saturday dress, which is probably for the best because I hardly ever wear dresses, hence why I don’t already own something appropriate for this event. — Stephanie Talmadge, social media editor
