Where Racked Editors Shopped This Week

I haven’t bought anything from American Apparel for...oh, I don’t know, maybe two or three years? There are a few "greatest hits" pieces in my closet that have seen better days — a black cotton pencil skirt, a pair of super-stretchy black high-waisted jeans, a sleeveless cropped denim button-down — that I’ve been wanting to replace, but not quite enough to set out to an American Apparel on my day off.

I found myself walking by the factory outlet in Soho (which I had no idea existed) when I was in the area for an appointment last week and seized the opportunity to peek inside, in case I could find any of those things at a discount. Of course, none of this stuff was there, but I did walk away with something new to then think about replacing for years and years: a black jumpsuit with a pleated front and nipped-in waist. After my first (unsuccessful) attempt at Beacon's Closet with our intern Kiara, I met her again at the Union Square store this past Sunday for a crash course on how to shop vintage (Her first tip? Go for colors you’re naturally drawn to first). We went through the racks together, filling my arms up with slip dresses, a Versace vest, and a Moschino plaid midi skirt.

I wasn't sure about the skirt, but she promised I would love it on (spoiler, I did) and could wear it with my Adidas sneakers as easily as with my favorite pair of heels. With her friends and family discount, it only cost $15.—Channing Hargrove, Racked NY associate editor

I was never really into fashion until I moved to New York City at the beginning of the summer — interning at Racked has really opened my eyes to expressing myself through clothes. I’m now more aware when I'm trying on clothes or watching TV, and I’ve noticed celebs like Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner wearing a lot of camouflage. When I was younger I would wear camo all the time, but I never thought it would come back and be so fashion-forward. I asked my closest friends, "Could I seriously pull off this look?" Of course, they said yes. But where do I even go to buy camo?

I was walking down 42nd Street on my way home from the office recently and had to do a double-take. There it was, a store that sold exactly what I was looking for. I did not use Google Maps to find this store — it was like a small Kim Kardashian angel led me this way.

I walked into Kaufman's Army & Navy with wide eyes. I honestly didn't even realize how many different types of camo there are. Anybody who is looking for any type of camouflage should go here, because the staff is so helpful and knowledgable and you’ll definitely find something that you like. I walked out obsessed with my camo tank top and T-shirt, both of which were more than affordable. Before the summer ends and I go back home to Pittsburgh, I’m coming back here to get a camo jacket for the fall.—Lydia Aquino, social media intern
