Peek Inside Eileen Fisher’s ‘Upcycled’ Clothing Pop-Up in Brooklyn

Eileen Fisher continues to be a leader in sustainable fashion. For the next two weekends, pop into 47 Bergen Street to shop a limited-edition range of upcycled fashion pieces created from damaged items donated to the company’s Green Eileen initiative.

The pop-up is a partnership with the CFDA’s Social Innovators: Teslin Doud, Carmen Gama, and Lucy Jones. Everything inside the shop, from the tables to the garments hanging on the racks, are made from recycled material — even the window panels are made up of reengineered pants.

“We really wanted customers to grasp the fact that people are making these clothes and there is a whole process that happens before you even see the garment,” Doud told Racked during a preview of the pop-up. “It’s about being able to see upcycled fashion in this space that mimics a greenhouse and understanding the work behind it.”

Customers can do exactly that thanks to the breakdown listed on each garment’s hanging tag — for example, an artisanal-looking coat is made from two pairs of pants, three tops, and 14 sweaters.

“Each garment has had at least 50 lives,” Jones said. “The tags are recycled, so is the paper the tags are printed on, the ink, everything!”

The designers used three distinct techniques to rework the fabrics: Felting, natural dying, and resewing. Price points range from $50 to $1,500.

The doors open at 47 Bergen Street in Boerum Hill today at 6pm, and you can shop Saturdays and Sundays through July 31st from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. — and check out the activities offered here, which include morning yoga and workshops on mending clothing and crafting sustainable jewelry.
