Surveying the Damage Done During the Diptyque Sample Sale's Opening Hours

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In case you still haven't made your way down to the Diptyque sample sale happening now at C21 Edition, you may want to hightail it to the Financial District and pray there are still some items left. We arrived at 7:30am for the 8am opening to find a line that wrapped around the front of the building — needless to say, it was as intense as the preview was weird.

After a two-hour wait, we made our way inside to find more than a few bare shelves, but still a lot to shop. When you first arrive on the second floor, the section to the left has fragrances (starting at $65), body care travel sets ($30), hourglass diffusers ($80) and a shelf of standard winter scented candles ($35).

If you're looking for minis, you'd be hard-pressed to find many, but there were standard candles in Ambre, Jasmin, Genevrier, Patchouli, and Noisetier left to pick up. Holiday candles were in full supply (starting at $20) and are placed throughout the sale.

Toward the middle, near the exit to the rest of Century 21, there are still two shelves of skincare products to shop, starting at $27 for Infused Facial Water and going up to $38 for the Face Collection Pouch. Be careful here, because we did notice some opened boxes. There is also yet another table of holiday candles here, which are probably your best bet if you're going to the sale now. Check out the gallery to see what was left in this section as of late this morning.

The area closest to the register was the most picked-through. Here, you'll find the largest amount of fragrances, including some roll-ons ($28) and solid perfumes ($25). This is the only section where you can get home accessories products: There were some candle stands ($12) and lids ($10) left. You may also find some candle coffrets here (starting at $40).

There are a few shelves near the checkout line are where you may get lucky and find some candle scents that were left behind (we spotted two standard Roses and a Choisya here!). There was also another shelf of holiday candles here. Yes, again.

All of the restock merchandise is gone, so whatever is left is what's pictured above. If you're planning on paying with credit, make sure you have a state-issued ID with you — they were very adamant about that. And as long as there's product remaining, expect to encounter a line.
