Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The J.Crew and Madewell sample sale just opened at 10am at 260 Fifth Avenue, with markdowns of up to 60% off both brands, plus the kid’s line, Crewcuts.

Two Racked editors stopped by the friends and family preview, which opened at 8am. A few of their biggest takeaways:

There are a lot of J.Crew shorts, J.Crew collection items, leather totes (many of which have "seen better days"), flats, and swimwear.

If you’re looking for holiday, our editors spotted a lot of sequins, feathers, and iridescent pieces.

There’s also a pretty big range in terms of collections: one of our editors found a dress she bought two years ago, and another found a polka-dot skirt she bought in-store just a few weeks ago.

Overall, the verdict was: pretty underwhelming. If you’re looking to grab some tees and basics, go for it. If not, you might want to wait until that line dies down.
